Outdoor Learning
At Janet Duke, Outdoor Learning sessions have been delivered over a number of years. We are lucky to have an outdoor area within the school that has been developed with wild plants, trees and a log circle. All children enjoy coming to this outdoor space for weekly session.
Why do we have Outdoor Learning?
Outdoor Learning sessions use our outdoor environment to help build independence, resilience and self-esteem in school-age children. Topics are cross-curriculum, (broad in subject) and include many hands on experiences with the natural environment. The sessions also give the children opportunities to develop other personal skills, such as teamwork and problem solving.
What activities do we offer in our outdoor learning sessions?
The outdoor learning sessions offer a wide range of activities. Activities are adapted based on the age of the children. The activities carried out are not only cross-curriculum but they keep the children active, teach them to take notice of the world around them, make connections and communicate with others. Activities that we have carried out include:
Tree decorating
Making a rainstorm
Outdoor yoga and mindfulness
Blindfolded teamwork and obstacle courses
Waterproof shelter building
Survival techniques
Water filteration
Fire safety
Pond dipping
Pioneering
And much more!
