OFSTED definition of teaching

‘Teaching should not be taken to imply a “top down” or formal way of working. It is a broad term that covers the many ways in which adults help young children learn. It includes their interactions with children during planned and child-initiated play and activities: communicating and modelling language, showing, explaining, demonstrating, exploring ideas, encouraging, questioning, recalling, providing a narrative for what they are doing, facilitating and setting challenges.

It takes account of equipment adults provide and the attention given to the physical environment, as well as the structure and routines of the day that establish expectations.’

Our work- Autumn Term:

Our topics this half term will be ‘Traditional Tales’ and ‘Aliens and Celebrations’

In Literacy we will be reading a selection of books related to our topics and using actions to help us to retell stories.  We will begin learning our sounds using Read Write Inc and aim to recognise all the single sounds and ‘special friend’ sounds and begin to blend using these sounds in our reading books.  We will be practising writing our names, either in our handwriting books or on whiteboards with our name cards. We will also be using the sounds we have learnt to begin to write simple phrases and sentences.

The children will begin by looking at books with no words to develop their understanding of story structure and then move onto reading books specifically selected to support their phonological awareness and these will be sent home for parents to support developing reading skills. It is vitally important that children read at least 3 times a week so that they can develop their reading skills.

In Maths we will be using ‘Number blocks’ to help us learn our numbers to 5. We will practise subitising (recognising numbers without counting) using these numbers.  We will also be learning about Matching and Sorting shapes and objects, including triangles and squares. In the term we will be looking at identifying and creating patterns. In all these areas we will be using songs and rhymes to support learning.

This term we will also discuss a range of other special times of the year including Remembrance Day, Diwali and Christmas.

Regards,

Mr Lynn (EYFS Lead) and the EYFS Team
