Welcome to the Year 1 page
In year 1, we have 3 classes: Pearl, Coral and Emerald. These are supported by Teaching Assistants.
Pearl: Miss McArthur
Coral- Mrs Cranmer
Emerald- Miss Styles
In Year 1 we learn English, Maths and Phonics every morning, During the afternoons we have Guided reading followed by topic lessons including History, Geography, Art, DT, PHSE, RE and Science.
Please look at our Long-Term Plans in the curriculum section to see an overview.
We enjoy reading in the year 1 and we read with our children in groups and individually. You will know when we have read because we will write a comment in their reading diaries. Children bring home new books weekly, and we would really like them to enjoy sharing with you at home. Please sign the reading dairies 3 x per week so the children can collect stickers for our book marks.
We have phonics sessions daily for 30 minutes. Here we follow RWI (Read, Write, inc) phonics scheme. Children will learn a new sound every day and apply this to real words, alien (nonsense words) and writing sentences. They will recap these everyday. Once all sounds have been learnt, they move onto RWI spelling scheme.
For our maths session, we will start off our year with very hands on practical maths. We will count from 1-20 forwards and backwards everyday and practice our formation of our numbers. We will be able to add and subtract numbers and use a variety of resources to help us. See the Long term plan to see our other maths units.
We send homework every week. It is sent out and handed in every Monday. This will comprise of a piece of English on Reading Eggs, Maths on Mathletics and Topic on purple mash. We also send weekly spellings from year 1 common exception words list and have a test once a week.
Please also take a look at the year 1 blog on purple mash to see any updates.
We love doing PE inside and outside. We have PE at least once a week. This means children must have a full PE kit in school every day. This consists of light blue tshirt, black shorts, plimsoles or trainers and a jumper and joggers for outside. If your son or daughter wears earrings, please make sure that they can remove them themselves or take them out before coming into school. If they have long hair this needs to be tied up.
Snack and Playtime
Everybody can bring in their own healthy snack for break time or the school will provide a piece of delicious fruit to try if you would prefer. Please make sure that you do not provide your child with an unhealthy snack such as crisps or chocolate and we are nut free school. In year 1 we take them outside at break time when the children enjoy the fresh air come rain or shine!
Children can choose to have a school meal which they can choose on the computer every morning or have a packed lunch.
The school uses a traffic light system to help reward behaviour, our aim is to keep the child on ‘ green’ we remind them daily that ‘It’s good to be Green’. Each time they reach a target for good behaviour they will receive a positive learning behaviour award, they are very proud of themselves.
Please come and see us for a chat, after school if you would like any more information from us.
