Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

Welcome to the Year 4 website page. The team in Year 4 are:

Teachers:    Mr O'Sullivan

                    Miss Thomas

                    Mrs Berry

Year 4 have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on these days. Tuesday is outdoor PE so please provide your child with seasonal suitable outdoor kit such as black joggers. Please send your child in with a bottle of water every day, clearly labelled with their name.

Homework is set each Tuesday and is expected to be completed and returned on Monday, two weeks later. Homework will be marked ready for the following Tuesday and books will not be returned to children before that date. Our expectation is for one piece of topic work to be completed fortnightly as per the child’s choice of activity. We also expect the children to complete one piece of Maths homework, one piece of English homework (which will include spellings) as well as reading three times per week. Maths and English homework will be given by the child’s set teacher so as to be appropriate and challenged to their ability.

We have recently finished our first topic this year called ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’. The children had a great time learning about ancient Egypt and finding interesting facts.

Our current topic is on Temples, Tombs and Treasures.

Other topics we have coming up throughout Year 4 are:

  • Gateways to the World

  • < >We hope your child enjoys their learning in Year 4. If you have any concerns or wish to talk to your child’s teacher can you please make an appointment and we would be happy to discuss your child’s progress and well-being with you.

Year 4 Multiplication Test

Dear Parent,

You may be aware that from June 2020 there is a new test for year 4 children called the “Multiplication Tables Check”. Here’s what you need to know:

We’re not worried. Under the national curriculum primary school children are expected to know their 12 times tables by the end of Year 4. So we’ve been preparing students to know their times tables by the end of Year 4 for quite some time now and are not concerned about the check at all.

The check itself:

  • will take place in the summer term in June.
  • is done online using a computer or tablet.
  • can be done one student at a time, in groups or as a class.
  • will take no longer than 5 minutes.
  • will feature 25 questions and children will have 6 seconds to answer each question.
  • There’s no problem solving or division just simple “3 x 4 = ?” type questions

Here are some resources that you can use to support your child in developing a sound knowledge of all their times tables up to 12 x 12. We strongly encourage you to work closely with your child on using these resources if your child is struggling with recalling their times tables knowledge.
